SIG 6 - Information and Communications Technology and Transport (ICT)
|
|
Launch date of the SIG / History: This SIG was originally launched by Ilan Salomon, then a Professor in the Department of Geography of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The original purpose was to weave emerging issues of telecommunications together with concerns of transportation and spatial behavior, urban transportation and land use policy, and energy and the environment.
Objectives: Its principal objectives are to explore conceptual, methodological, and/or empirical studies of the interrelation between telecommunications (broadly viewed, including information and communication and technology) and traveler behavior, and the interaction between the demand for travel and the demand for communication via voice or data.
Major Accomplishments: SIG6 has had a strong presence at the meetings of the Transportation Research Board in Washington DC every year. There are emerging networks of workshops/conferences worldwide as part of NECTAR and allied initiatives.
Membership: Membership is open to any academic or practitioner with an interest in the subject area. Anyone interested in joining is invited to contact Kevin J. Krizek at the address below. There is an active email distribution list (telecom-trb 'at' ucdavis.edu) for interested participants, currently maintained by Pat Mokhtarian and housed at UC Davis.
